Man drinking out of Klean Kanteen cafe cap

The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide bottle is a super solid and highly reliable flask that will withstand life’s thrills and spills out in the wilderness or during everyday life.

If you care about the environment and value high quality items that perform as they claim they will, then Klean Kanteen is a brand that you need in your life. The Insulated Wide is the perfect coffee container during big days in the mountains or out on the water. But it performs equally well keeping bubbly beer icy cold on evening excursions to the beach. Or your morning brew piping hot way past lunchtime. It’s big enough to satisfy your thirst, but small enough to be able to take with you wherever you go.

Design features of the Insulated Wide

Size and shape

Klean Kanteen flask in backpack pocketThe bottle fits perfectly into the side pocket of most backpacks but is also not too big for your handbag for everyday use. If you’re willing to let it get a few scratches, then it fits snuggly in a bottle cage on a bike, but most importantly it’s just the right size for your hand! Not too wide and not too skinny!

Volume

Klean Kanteen flask in handsAt 16oz (473ml) this is the perfect volume for a large hot drink for one. And if you make an extra strong brew then it’s just enough to share too. I’ve found that flasks that hold more, are less useful without an integrated cup so that you can share your drink easily. I tend not to want a litre of coffee all to myself in one day!

Wide mouth

Open insulated flask in handsA wide mouth makes life so much easier on many levels. You can clean it easily, add ice cubes, stir the contents with a spoon, fill it easily, and drink from it like a cup or mug (rather than like a bottle). The lip of the Klean Kanteen is slim and feels delicate when drinking from it, and it also pours very nicely with no drips or dribbles.

Café Cap

Cafe Cap Flask LidA simple twist and the secure leak-proof design provides a good flow of drip-free sipping. The cap is made from BPA-free polypropylene and food grade silicone, and is easy to dissemble for proper cleaning and drying.

Flip D-Ring Cap

D-Ring Cap of Klean Kanteen flaskThis design provides a slightly lower profile finish than the café cap and the internal stainless steel ensures that no plastic will touch your drink. The D-ring allows for easy carrying or can be clipped onto the outside of your backpack with a carabiner during longer hikes when pocket space is limited.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel inside of Klean Kanteen flaskThe 18/8 stainless steel double-wall vacuum-insulated construction comes with a Strong As Steel Guarantee and claims to keep the contents of the flask hot for 10 hours or iced for 30 hours. The interior also has an electropolished finish that doesn’t retain or impart flavours. Essential when you are using it to keep your coffee piping or your beer chilled. (Not at the same time though!).

Review of the Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide

The first time I used the Klean Kanteen bottle was on a big day hike during winter. 5ºC and sunny! Perfect hiking conditions but just chilly enough to warrant needing a hot drink.

Leak-proof

Keen to sip on my coffee throughout the day, I sealed the bottle with the café lid. Now I have always been a little bit suspicious of café lids and their leak-proof claims. Leak-proof when not tilted beyond 45º? Or leak-proof full stop?! Well it turns out that the Klean Kanteen café lid is leak-proof full stop! I put the bottle upside-down in the external side pocket of my backpack and it didn’t let even a single drop out. Impressed! I’ve had normal flask lids fail on me over the years, leaking through the entire contents of my backpack and onto my dry clothes. So to have the convenience of a café lid outperform a normal lid is a totally new concept to me.

That said, it’s VERY easy to not twist the cafe lid round properly. This is user error, to a degree. But just double check you’ve done it properly before you chuck it on the passenger seat of your car. Yes, I’ve done that!

Temperature

I filled my Klean Kanteen with piping hot coffee before I left the house, and started sipping on it after about 4 hours – still piping hot (but not scalding). After 6 hours, and having opened and closed the café lid several times throughout the day, the coffee was on the hot side of warm and still highly enjoyable as a warming drink, but certainly not piping hot any more. Klean Kanteen claim that it should keep its contents hot for up to 10 hours. Perhaps if you didn’t open it every now and then it might retain more heat.

I’ve yet to test its effectiveness at keeping cool drinks cold in hot conditions, but will update this review as soon as the weather gets hot enough!

An eco-friendly choice for your hydration

Before I even touched this sleek and solid insulated bottle I was impressed. The box that it arrived in was no bigger than it needed to be, and made of recycled card. But better still, there was no plastic bubble wrap inside the box. So refreshing! Instead the bottle was wrapped in tissue paper and corrugated card. Packaging really matters. And bad packaging matters even more. Klean Kanteen are proving that there are eco-friendly solutions to bad packaging that are actually viable on a large scale. So huge thumbs up for the packaging alone!

But that’s not the only positive impact this great brand are having on the world. They are 1% For the Planet members, contributing over $1.5 million to environmental organisations that are dedicated to preserving and restoring wild places.

Flask on the grass

Things I don’t love about the Insulated Wide bottle

Grip: The smooth matt finish, although beautiful to look at and lovely to touch, doesn’t provide as much grip as other bottles I have used like the Hydro Flask. It’s not terrible and I’m not dropping the bottle all the time. But I personally prefer a little more texture to help me grip the bottle easily.

Rattle: Another tiny thing that most people won’t have an issue with, is the ring of the Flip D-ring Cap rattles a little. It’s not loud at all, but if you’re hiking on your own there’s a chance it might start to get to you after a while! Again, a very small gripe that is probably unavoidable without compromising the functionality and effectiveness of the design.

Verdict

The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide bottle is a highly effective insulated bottle that keeps your drinks at the temperature they’re supposed to be at. The size and volume of this 16 oz bottle is ideal for one person, and the lids won’t let you down and leak all over your stuff! You also don’t get much better than Klean Kanteen as a brand from an environmental point of view, and their products ooze with high end durable quality that will certainly go the distance with you on all your adventures, wherever they take you.
