Design features of the Healthy Human 21oz Stein

Lid

Stainless steel lidThe plastic lid screws on really securely and crucially, is leak proof! The inside of the lid is made from stainless steel to ensure that no plastic touches your drink, ever. This is a really nice feature for those not wanting to risk even the insides of BPA-free plastic lids from touching your drinks.

Carry handle

Carry handle on bottleThe comfortable plastic handle on the lid is big enough to get three of my fingers underneath to carry it – it’s really nice and wide compared to other bottles I have used. There is also a very handy mini carabiner attached to the handle to clip onto your pack or belt.

Insulation

21oz insulated SteinThe Stein is vacuum insulated with a double wall of safe 18/8 stainless steel. This means that as well as keeping its contents cold or hot for longer, it also prevents the outside of the bottle from sweating, and it helps prevent the inside from taking on any unwanted flavours.

External finish

Drinking from bottleThe matt finish is very pleasing to grip, and coupled with the slim profile of the bottle makes it fit comfortably and easily in my small hand. The subtle texture makes it feel really secure with minimal risk of it slipping through my fingers.

Healthy Human 21oz Stein review

My first experience using the Stein was mid summer in Oklahoma, hiking in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge – it was hot! Healthy Human claim that the Stein keeps cold drinks cold for 24 hours. Thankfully I wasn’t out hiking in the heat for that long, so I didn’t get to truly test this out, but it did keep my chilled water cold from morning until evening. (I did drink other water during this time by the way!)

Heat-wise, I’m always surprised when I go to take a sip of my hot tea or coffee and find that it’s still not drinkable after 3 or 4 hours. It’s almost too good at keeping drinks hot! After 7 hours hot drinks are drinkable, but still very hot. And after around 10 hours hot drinks are more on the warm side of hot.

Also, after 3 or 4 months of regularly using it to drink tea and coffee out of, there’s no residual flavours when I opt for fresh cold water. Compared to my, albeit smaller, Klean Kanteen it does a better job at both keeping hot drinks hot and remaining taste-free.

What I love the most about the Healthy Human 21oz Stein

The handle is really nice. It’s comfortable and fits well in my hand, and is much easier to hold than the handle on my Hydro Flask which you can only get one finger through (very uncomfortable). In all other aspects, however, the Stein performs very similarly to the 21oz Hydro Flask, aside from the inside of the lid which is plastic and not stainless steel.

What I don’t love so much about the Healthy Human 21oz Stein

As much as the mini carabiner is handy when you need to use it, when it’s not needed it’s really annoying! I’ve ended up taking mine off permanently to stop me going crazy with the noise it makes rattling and clunking on the metal bottle whilst I’m hiking. That said, it’s a nice little extra that is really useful if things like this don’t get to you! And if they do, then you’ve got a freebie thrown in. Who doesn’t need a mini carabiner in their life anyway?!

Verdict

The Healthy Human 21oz Stein is a very similar insulated bottle to the 21oz Hydro Flask. However, for a few dollars less, the Stein offers a nicer grip, stainless steel on the inside of the lid, and a much more pleasant and easy to hold handle.

This is a really excellent and very well insulated bottle that is as well suited to the rough and tumble of outdoor adventures as it is to everyday use at work or around town.
