Features of the Nomvdic R150 Smart Portable LED Projector

Rotating lens

Projector speakerThe rotating lens is one of the best features of the R150 and makes it extremely versatile and suitable for screenings in a range of scenarios. You just need to twist the side of the projector to the desired angle and the flat “foot” underneath the lens keeps the projector securely in place.

You can rotate the lens up to 90º and you can even twist it around to project things onto your ceiling!

Connectivity

Projector connection pointsThere are a number of ways in which you can view movies and TV on the R150. These include: HDMI cable, USB-C cable,USB flash drive, TV dongle or by connecting it to an app (Netflix, Smartube etc). All of the connection points are found on the end of the projector under hidden housing.

You can also link devices to the projector via bluetooth or connect to Airplay or screen mirror as well as audio content to use the speaker.

Remote control

Projector remote controlA simple to use remote control adds to the convenience of the R150 projector. It’s also required for the initial setup of the projector and when navigating the setting options. It takes two AAA batteries (not included).

Carry case

Projector carry caseAt 26 x 21cm (approximately), the carry case is compact and provides excellent protection to the projector. There’s also space inside for a cable and a slot for the remote control. Plus, a handle on the outside makes carrying it very easy. I don’t feel precious of it when packing it into the car on camping trips.

Audio

Projector on outdoor tableThe projector has integrated stereo speakers which can also be used solely as a Bluetooth speaker. The volume of the speakers is punchy enough to fill a room when used indoors. And even outdoors you’ll not need anything much louder unless there’s lots of background noise or wind.

However, if you’re used to listening to music or watching movies through higher spec speakers then you may find the sound quality a little lacking. It’s a little on the tinny and trebly side with no audio settings to increase the bass or alter the balance.

Nomvdic R150 Smart Portable LED Projector review

Initial setup

I’m generally pretty useless at tech! But even for me the initial setup was fairly straightforward. The use of the remote control is essential, so make sure that you have batteries at the ready! Connecting to the internet is a fairly slow process of using arrows on the remote control to navigate a keyboard on the screen. However, I then connected a mouse which made connecting to my Netflix account really easy. I can now just go straight to Netflix and use it as normal (but only with a mouse).

Functionality

Using the projector is intuitive and straightforward. All the connection points are housed together and are clearly labeled. Plus, the remote control is simple with enough buttons to navigate things easily but without being over complicated.

It’s also very easy to get a clear and crisp picture that’s in the perfect position on the wall or screen, thanks to the rotating lens.

To allow for odd wall/screen angles and when the projector is tilting upwards towards a screen, there is an auto vertical keystone function. This is a really nice feature that straightens up the image on the screen so that it appears totally vertical instead of wider at the top than the bottom.

Watching outdoor movie

Outdoor movie nights

The best way to view movies on the R150 in outdoor scenarios is via USB flash drive. This means that you don’t have to rely on potentially intermittent wifi connection. That said, if you have a strong 4G or 5G connection you can screenshare straight from your phone or view via screening apps. We prefer the certainty of zero reception issues during the film, so opt for using a flash drive.

Indoor movie nights

We don’t have a TV at home, but instead use a projector. We love how indoor movie nights and series watching are as much an event as outdoor movie nights as there’s always a bit of setup and connection involved with our 6-year old projector. However, the ability to watch things straight through the app on the R150 cuts setup time in half compared with our old projector.

What I love the most about the Nomvdic R150 Smart Portable LED Projector

I really like how small and portable it is. And how protective the case is. As a result, it gets chucked in the car on trips when we’re not sure whether we’ll use it or not. But it doesn’t really matter if we don’t as it’s so compact!

It’s also pretty straightforward to both setup and to use, with a variety of different connection methods. And I really love that you can view things directly through screening apps like Netflix (when you have internet connection).

What I don’t love so much about the Nomvdic R150 Projector

Despite its compact and portable nature, the R150 doesn’t carry any waterproofing or shock proofing credentials. To make it truly suited to outdoor use in the backyard or when camping, I would like it to come with at least an IP rating of X2 which protects from vertically dripping water. We’ve had a few outdoor movie nights in the past where the dew has started to settle in, mid-screening. Our old projector was a little more robust to the weather so we didn’t worry about it too much. But I’m reluctant to use the R150 in such conditions.

The sound quality could also be a little better.

Verdict

The Nomvdic R150 Projector is primarily an excellent indoor projector that’s easy to use with a variety of connection options. However, its compact nature, along with a highly protective carry case, also makes it very well suited to outdoor movie nights in dry conditions. The sound quality could offer a bit more depth and the projector lacks the weather protection of more outdoor specific options on the market. But who holds outdoor movie nights in bad weather anyways?!
