Luxury Tents for Camping: The Best Glamping Tents in 2024

Luxury tent for camping

Some of us love everything about the great outdoors. We spend as much of our summer breaks as possible sleeping under canvas. We pack our tents, mats, and family members into the car at the first opportunity. And whilst some are drawn to the simplicity of sleeping on a thin mat, cooking on an open fire, and collecting water from the nearest stream, others prefer something a little more comfortable. Fortunately getting back to basics doesn’t have to leave you with backache, smoke in your eyes, and bugs in your drinking water. This is where opting for luxury tents for camping can be a game-changer.

Camping in luxury tents, otherwise known as ‘Glamping’, is the perfect way for you and your friends and family to get out in the great outdoors without sacrificing all creature comforts. If you’re reading this article then you’re probably tired of grubby feet and dirty nails, and you’re ready to light up your camping trips with a few fairly lights and patterned bunting. We at Cool of the Wild have got the topic covered. We’ve taken a look at various luxury tents and assessed the weight, durability, water and wind resistance, and how easy they are to set up. We’ve also looked at the individual styles and designs, from yurts to teepees, and put together our collection of the best luxury tents for your 2024 DIY glamping trip.

FAQs when choosing the best glamping tents

What is a glamping tent?
There is no set definition for what a glamping tent is. For some people it is the promise of warmth and resistance against the elements. For others it is a tent made from thick cotton canvas that looks beautiful and offers oodles of space to relax in. Either way, a glamping tent provides camping luxury to suit the tastes, needs and wants of the individual camper.
What are glamping tents called?
There are number of different types of glamping tents including yurts, bell tents, cabin tents and teepee tents.
What is the difference between a tent and a yurt?
The definition of a tent is:
“A portable shelter made of cloth, supported by one or more poles and stretched tight by cords or loops attached to pegs driven into the ground.”The definition of a yurt is:
“A circular tent of felt or skins on a collapsible framework, used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.”
Are bell tents waterproof?

Cotton canvas bell tents that are designed to be fully waterproof. See the next question for more information on this! That said, there are some polyester bell tents on our list of luxury tents that have different waterproofing properties to the canvas options. The Hasika 4-Season Family Tent and the Grand Canyon Indiana Pyramid Tent are both polyester tents that, although waterproof, may need treating with waterproofing after a while. Read more about how to waterproof a tent in our waterproofing guide.

Are canvas tents waterproof?

In short, yes – canvas tents are waterproof. However, it’s not unusual for a canvas tent to leak a little the first few times it gets rained on. This is not because it is faulty, but because the waterproofness of cotton canvas actually improves once it’s become wet. The cotton weave of the fabric tightens up once wet, effectively closing up all the tiny holes in the coarse fabric.

It is also worth noting that many modern canvas tents also come pre-treated to prevent the potential for an initial leak.

Do canvas tents need waterproofing?

Many modern canvas tents are treated with a DWR coating to help prevent leaks. However, if you have a new canvas tent that isn’t treated then it’s a good idea to put it up in the backyard and soak it with water before you use it. This encourages the cotton fibres to tighten up and closes up the tiny holes in the weave.

There are also canvas waterproofing treatments that you can apply if this doesn’t give you the results you are after.

Best glamping tents

Elk Mountain Bell Tent

Elk Mountain Tents Yukon Bell Tent

Available in 13ft (4m) and 16ft (5m) sizes, the Elk Mountain Tents Yukon Bell Tent is built for everything from winter camping and hunting expeditions to glamping and car camping. Unlike the other bell tents on our list, this one is made of 100% polyester and not cotton canvas. The result is a tent with a higher tear strength that is durable, naturally waterproof and also much more resistant to rotting than regular cotton canvas.

The polyester material also means that this is one of the best bell tents for easy set up. Though the weight of the galvanized steel poles and stakes don’t make the overall weight much lower than other options, the low weight of the canvas material certainly makes up for it. This makes it easier and quicker to erect the tent, and it’s also much easier to deal with when wet as it doesn’t get as saturated as cotton.

Featuring a removable, zip-in PVC floor, 4 windows and 4 peak vents (all of which have mosquito netting), and a zippered, screened door, the Yukon offers great value for year-round camping. Additionally, Elk Mountain Tents (who also sell canvas wall tents) ensure speedy shipping that you won’t have to wait around for.

Pros

  • Good value
  • High tear strength
  • Resistant to mold and mildew
  • Lightweight material makes it easy to put up/take down, especially when wet
  • Includes uncut stove jack

Cons

  • Not made of traditional cotton canvas

Karma 6m ZIG Bell Tent

Karma ZIG Bell Tent

Eco-conscious: Made from organic cotton canvas

The UK based company, Karma Canvas, specialise in classic bell tents with a luxurious and modern twist. The Karma ZIG Bell Tent is our top choice when it comes to sustainable glamping tents. Another feature we like is the heavy-duty zippered and waterproof groundsheet. On warmer camping trips the groundsheet can be unzipped and the fly hooked up for extra ventilation. Kodiak Cabin Tent

Kodiak Cabin Tent

This is one of the best luxury tents for longer camping trips or harsh conditions. Although the steel frame and welded corner brackets make the tent quite heavy and bulky when packed, they also make a very sturdy tent frame which can hold up to strong winds and mountain weather. Likewise, the Hydra-Shield cotton duck canvas features a tight weave capable of keeping campers dry even during thunderstorms and blizzards. The puncture resistant vinyl groundsheet is also great for camping on rough ground protecting airbeds and camping mats from damage.

The Kodiak Cabin tent is also suitable for use in warmer climates. The 5 large mesh windows allow for air to flow and keep out swarms of summer gnats. The versatile design features a large D-shaped front door as well as a smaller entrance, and one side wall which can be rolled away or opened to make a shaded outdoor space for dining. We recommend the Kodiak Cabin Tent for taller people due to the steep sides which offer substantially more headroom than yurt style tents.

  • Versatile design
  • Highly waterproof
  • Excellent ventilation
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Difficult to set up solo

Coleman Octagon 98 8-Person Outdoor Tent

Coleman Octagon 98 8-Person Outdoor Tent

The Coleman Octagon provides excellent value that, despite its lower end price bracket, manages to do a really good job of standing up to the elements, like most Coleman tents. It also provides a tall and roomy space for up to 8 campers. At 15m2 it is one of the larger luxury tents on our list that isn’t a bell tent with the additional bonus that it can be divided into two spaces with a removable room divider.

The full length water resistant polyester rainfly has a zip on 6 sides that open up to create an almost gazebo-like feel to the tent. This also provides excellent ventilation and 360º views through the mesh windows of the inner section of the tent – not the only feature that makes this an appealing child and family friendly tent. There are also internal storage pockets and integrated cup holders to avoid unwanted spillages. Plus, one of the two doors has a hinged design for super easy fly-in, fly-out use by the kids.

Pros

  • Good value
  • Spacious
  • Very family friendly
  • Can be set up by one person
  • Sides come off to create a gazebo-like feel

Cons

  • Not made of traditional cotton canvas
  • Not great in really bad weather

Tahoe Gear Bighorn Teepee Tent

Tahoe Gear Bighorn Teepee Tent

The Tahoe Gear Bighorn Teepee Tent is one of the best-priced luxury tents on the market, especially for the number of people that it can accommodate. Yes, this teepee tent can sleep up to 12 people! Or for a little more luxury, the 18 x 18 ft area can easily fit in 4 queen-sized air beds. A superb option for adult groups or big families. It lacks the headspace of the bell tents, unless you’re in the centre of the tent. But the 9 ft tall centre pole is surprisingly sturdy in strong winds.

The Bighorn Teepee Tent is made from durable polyester with a non-sewn in groundsheet, 4 PVC windows, multiple floor vents, and mesh roof panels for ventilation. Our main criticism is that there is no mesh door which means it can get pretty hot inside in warm weather when the bugs are buzzing!

Pros

  • Good value
  • Super spacious
  • Stable in strong winds

Cons

  • Not made of traditional cotton canvas
  • No mesh door

Grand Canyon Indiana Pyramid Tent

Grand Canyon Indiana Pyramid Tent

The Grand Canyon Indiana Pyramid is a great addition to your camping trip. The 3000 mm waterproof polyester fabric and taped seams offer excellent shelter from the rain, while sturdy steel pegs and the central pole can withstand fairly strong winds. Considering its capacity for 8 people plus luggage this tent is extremely lightweight making it perfect for travel, hiking trips, or festivals. We also like its native teepee design. It is available in stone or green and adds a natural aesthetic to the tent, blending into mountain scenery and forests. This spacious tent could easily be turned into a luxury space with some mood lighting and rustic blankets! There’s also plenty of room for a king or queen-sized bed and the Grand Canyon Indiana Pyramid Tent could easily double as a social point or yoga space.

Pros

  • Waterproof
  • Built-in groundsheet
  • Convenient carry size
  • Reasonable Price

Cons

  • Not the most durable

What to look for in the ideal luxury tent for camping

Aesthetics

There’s no getting away from it: if you want to ‘do’ glamping properly,  your luxury tent should look the part. Of course, there’s no point going straight for the most gorgeous bell tent available if it doesn’t hold up in bad weather etc. But one of the things that makes a tent luxurious is that it doesn’t look and feel like your average family tent from REI. There are a load of different styles of tents that fit under the ‘luxury tent’ label, including bell tents, teepees, cabin tents, safari tents and even roof top tents. They all look fabulous and have a air of classiness and quality about them.

Durability

Luxury tents tend to come with a high price tag. Thankfully, it’s not just their great looks that you’re forking out for. Many of the pricer options on our list are made with highly durable cotton canvas and come with heavy duty poles and thick rope guy lines. These high end tents are built to last a lifetime and are worth the initial outlay for years of DIY glamping. The lower priced options offer durability that is more aligned with a regular camping tent.

Ease of setup

One of the downsides of camping in luxury tents is that they can take a long time to set up. This can be down to the heavy fabric. But mostly it is because they are large, and some designs, like teepee and bell tents, are designed to be set up in such a way that ensures they’ll withstand the wind very efficiently — this takes time. If the idea of spending more than 5 minutes putting up a tent sends shivers down your spine, you should consider an inflatable tent, or even a pop-up tent!

Weight

The best luxury tents for glamping are heavy. As mentioned, they are made with highly durable, heavy duty materials that will stand the test of time. To ensure there’s plenty of room for relaxing, luxury tents are usually large, too, thus adding to their weight. There are, however, a few lightweight options on our list. So if weight is an issue for transportation, or you’ve got grand plans of trekking your tent into a wild place, then opt for the Winterial Teepee Tent or Big Agnes Mint Saloon Tent.

Weatherproof

Weatherproofness is all the more important when camping in luxury tents. You should be worrying about who’s putting the next pot of coffee on the brew, not whether your tent is going to fall down in the wind. Some of the tents on our list offer better protection against the elements than others, but they are all waterproof and are designed to withstand windy conditions.

If you’re not sure camping in luxury tents is for you, then take a look at our tents guide to make sure you’ve considered all your options.

Getting the right luxury tent sure makes a big difference to your glamping experience. But there are also lots of other ways you can make your regular camping setup more glam. Check out these gorgeous glamping accessories and plus our top tips to DIY glamping.
