Many years ago I spent a whole summer climbing the awesome crags that surround the town of Revelstoke in BC. I was out in the middle of the forest one day at one of my favourite climbing spots, Shaketown. Nature called, and on perching in a suitably private spot in the shade, the shadow of a gorgeous fern was cast across my skin. Its position, at the top of my leg on my hip crease, was so perfectly placed that I decided, mid-pee, that if I were to ever get a tattoo, that’s what and where it would be. Well I never got it done. But every now and then I wonder whether one day I might take the plunge and just do it.
I was recalling this story recently to a fellow outdoor enthusiast who was adamant that I should get it done. As much as I love nature and adventure and camping, I’m still unconvinced. It did however, get me thinking about what other cool outdoor tattoos might also work. And whether everyone that gets a camping tattoo or a hiking tattoo has a story behind it. Do they just love the outdoors? Or did something unusual, scary, exciting or fun happen to inspire it?
On looking around for some inspiration, I came across this incredible array of outdoor themed and camping tattoos that other people have committed to. The meanings and inspirations behind the designs are held so close to their hearts that they have chosen to have them visible on their bodies for the rest of their lives. Surely some significant happenings have made these people choose camping tattoos? More significant than the shadow of a fern catching me with my pants down?!
Well only they will be able to tell you what inspired them. But I like looking deep into the intricate and often colourful designs of these camping tattoos and letting my mind wander. To imagine where that inspiration came from. What they were doing at the time. Who they were with. What happened that day.
Perhaps you might find different stories behind these beautiful expressions of deep passion for the outdoor world. Or maybe you’ll just see someone who is much braver and bolder than me!
